Acne: (Acne Vulgaris) is a very common skin disorder which mainly affects adolescents and young adults. It occurs in areas that have a high concentration of sebaceous glands, mainly on the chest, back and face. Typically, red, angry-looking spots form on the skin but acne also manifests itself in the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and pus-filled cysts. As the spots heal they fade to a pink mark that disappears later, although spots which become cysts on the skin will usually leave a pock mark.

Western Herbalism: A detoxification program of herbal treatment may be followed up by hormonal treatments or remedies to reduce stress.  An anti-inflammatory skin wash made from calendula, camomile or a mixture of yarrow, elder and lavender will help soothe and reduce the outbreak.
Chinese Herbalists: will suggest heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs.
Aromatherapists: may use tea tree with thyme and lindol and, for rebalancing, pine or clary sage.
Nutritional therapy: Unlike conventional medical practitioners, nutritional therapists believe that acne is linked with excess fat in the diet and also with certain food intolerances, such as cheese or chocolate.  Nutritional deficiencies (particularly zinc and vitamin A) will be determined, particularly when associated with liver congestion.  It may be brought on by hormonal changes due to menstruation and this will be investigated.
