New Acne Treatments
Acne is a condition that most people will suffer from at some point in their lives. It causes pimples and blemishes to develop on the face as well as other parts of the body.
People often squeeze pimples and that practice should be avoided. Squeezing pimples can leave scars that are hard to get rid of. The emotional pain of acne can last for several years. That is why people should seek treatment early on.
Below are some of the different new acne treatments available:
- Antibiotics
- Antibiotics are one of the most commonly prescribed acne treatments. Acne is made worse by inflammation caused by bacteria and antibiotics work by reducing inflammation by killing the bacteria. Antibiotics are a very effective acne treatment. However, they have a tendency to become less effective if a person uses them for an extended period of time.
Chemical peels
- Chemical peels were initially used to fight the signs of aging, but today they are being used to treat acne. They work by unclogging the pores and removing dead skin cells. Chemical peels have been shown to be very effective, but they do come with unpleasant side effects. Some of those side effects include: redness, scaling, infection and skin coloring.
Laser therapy
- Laser therapy is one of the newest acne treatments. The sebaceous glands are responsible for producing oil. When these glands produce too much oil, acne can result. Laser therapy works by destroying the sebaceous glands. Because laser therapy is a new treatment, more research will need to be done to determine the effectiveness of it.
Steroid Injections
- Steroid injections are usually reserved for more serious acne. They work by flattening out the acne lesions. Steroid injections are very effective, but they are not intended for long-term use because complications can result. Some of those complications include hypopigmentation, thinning of the skin and the formation of small blood vessels on the skin.
Acne is a common medical condition, but the fact that it is so common does not make it any easier to deal with. Fortunately, acne can be treated with a number of new acne treatments such as antibiotics, chemical peels, laser therapy and steroid injections. Working with a dermatologist will help a person find the right treatment.
